SPEAKER

Frances Taylor Gench is an ordained minister of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), and was on the faculty of Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg from 1986 to 1999. She served as a member of the PC(USA) General Assembly’s Theological Task Force on Peace, Unity, and Purity of the Church (2001-2006), and is a parish associate at The New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C. Her research and teaching interests include the Gospels, women in the biblical world and feminist biblical criticism, global and intercultural perspectives on the Bible, and issues of biblical authority and interpretation.  The author of six books, her most recent publication is Encountering God in Tyrannical Texts: Reflections on Paul, Women, and the Authority of Scripture (Westminster John Knox Press, 2015).

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Dr. Gench says, "For many centuries, dating back to the ancient Jerusalem liturgy, the Church has singled out stories from John’s Gospel for reflection during Lent (the stories of Nicodemus, the Samaritan woman, the man born blind, and the raising of Lazarus).  The lectionary also features texts from John throughout the season of Easter.  We will prepare for preaching and teaching Johannine texts through collective reflection on them and consideration of new angles of vision provided by recent methodologies and interpreters who read the Bible from different social locations."

WHO BENEFITS

Invigorate your thinking with the latest in biblical scholarship while you let someone else do the cooking! Pastors, elders, adult education teachers, Commissioned Ruling Elders, seminarians and others under care of our Presbytery in preparation for ministry will benefit from Dr. Gench's presentation and from lively in-depth discussions within the group. Plus there’s time at Menucha for walking, meditating, and long conversations or napping – whatever feeds your soul.
