Marqus Cole, JD
For this Winter Quarter Faith, Diversity, and Science lecture, speaker Marqus Cole joins the SPU community to present his lecture, “Can I get a climate witness?”
Mr. Cole uses his unique voice as a Black, millennial, professional, person of faith to bridge the gap between key stakeholder communities in this climate moment. In this lecture, you’ll hear his call is to train, equip, and mobilize believers to recover the scriptural mandate to steward and care for creation. His thought leadership sits at the intersection of racial justice, environmental justice, and biblical justice with a passion for helping organize people and communities toward reconciliation and restoration.
Marqus Cole, JD, is a Public Voices Fellow with the Op-Ed Project in Partnership with the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication. He serves nationally as the director of Church and Community Engagement with the Evangelical Environmental Network, as well as being on staff as a community engagement coordinator with Grace Snellville, a suburban Atlanta congregation. A recent candidate for United States Congress in the Georgia 7th Congressional District, Marqus finds himself living and working in a hinge community, at a hinge moment, for historic climate action.
Marqus Cole was trained in the inaugural cohort of the Racial Justice Training Institute (2014) created by the Shriver Center on Poverty Law. He holds a bachelor degree in political science from Georgia State University, and a juris doctorate from DePaul College of Law. He is a lawyer, civic leader, and ministry worker.
This lecture series, now in its second year, is co-hosted by the Office of Inclusive Excellence and the Biology Department and sponsored by a grant from the Supporting Structures: Innovative Partnerships to Enhance Bench Science at the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities member institutions. The grant is supported by Scholarship and Christianity in Oxford, the UK subsidiary of the CCCU, with funding by the John Templeton Foundation and the MJ Murdock Charitable Trust.
